Procedure

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat from areas of the body that may be difficult to target with diet and exercise alone. This procedure can achieve a more slender, sculpted physique.

Liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure, typically under general anesthesia. Small incisions will be made to allow for a specialized suctioning device to remove excess fat deposits. These incisions are easily concealed and typically fade to be unnoticeable, even to the patient.

Liposuction is one of the most rewarding procedures for patients who want to improve their physique. Although liposuction removes excess fat and usually provides the skin with a smoother appearance, it is not considered a viable treatment for cellulite and instead should be thought of as a tool to improve body contour.

Candidates

Ideal candidates for liposuction should be in good general health and are close to their target weight but have stubborn areas of fat that have been difficult to eliminate with diet and exercise. It is important to have realistic expectations of the procedure and to understand that liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure.

Treatable Areas

Liposuction is a very versatile procedure that can be used to contour and remove fat from almost any area of the body.

  • Neck

Excess fat below the jaw and in the neck can create a double chin and unfortunately make even a thin person appear much heavier. Liposuction can restore a smoother profile to the neck and jaw, improving definition in the face and along the jawline.

  • Arms

The accumulation of fat in the upper arms can lead to feelings of self consciousness when wearing clothing that exposes this area. Liposuction can remove this excess fat to restore a more slender arm with better definition.

  • Abdomen & Waist

The midsection is one of the most difficult areas to target fat loss and stubborn fat tends to accumulate here. Targeted liposuction to this area produces a slimmer waistline and flatter contoured abdomen.

  • Back & Flanks

Liposuction can be targeted to the upper back and bra line, or the lower back to address stubborn “love handles” and allow clothing to fit better.

  • Buttocks

Excess fat can accumulate in unflattering areas of the buttock and targeted liposuction can be used to contour and improve the shape of the buttock. Fat grafting can also be performed to the buttock to further maximize contour and results.

  • Hips & Thighs

Excessive fat commonly accumulates to the hips and thighs of women, resulting in a pear, rather than hourglass body shape. Liposuction can provide a slimmer appearance, sculpting your hips and thighs, and improving overall body balance.

  • Harvest for Fat Grafting

If your treatment plan includes fat grafting, the fat that is harvested from liposuction is processed and then injected into target areas to restore volume, improve skin quality, and smooth contour deformities. Areas of the body that are typically used for fat graft harvest include the thighs, abdomen, and flanks. The fat stores in these areas are of better quality, and therefore, the fat is retained at a higher rate.

Recovery

As with any surgery, some swelling, bruising, and soreness are to be expected at first. You will be administered pain medication to help control any post-op discomfort. You will also be required to wear a compression garment to reduce postoperative swelling. Tenderness and swelling should begin to subside after a few days. Most of the swelling should begin to resolve after a few weeks, but final results will not be fully appreciated until approximately 2-3 months post operatively. Most patients can return to work within a week depending on the nature of their job. Scars may remain red or pink for a few months but will eventually fade to be less noticeable.

Results

It is important to note that the contours of your body will be noticeably slimmer and more defined, but these results typically are not fully visualized until 2-3 months postoperatively. Liposuction permanently removes fat cells. However, the remaining fat cells in the treated area(s) can still increase in size with weight gain. In order to preserve your results, it is important to maintain a stable weight and follow a healthy diet and exercise regimen.
